1835 PRIME MINISTERIAL INVITATION FROM THE DUKE AND DUCHESS DE BROGLIE
Issued by the President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs of France

A scarce and historically evocative invitation issued from the highest levels of French government during the July Monarchy, dated 20 January 1835, and sent in the name of Victor, Duke de Broglie (1785–1870), then serving simultaneously as President of the Council (Prime Minister of France) and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The printed invitation reads:

“The President of the Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Madame the Duchess de Broglie request that Mademoiselle Macaulay do them the honor of spending the evening at their residence on Friday, 20 January 1835, at nine o’clock.”

At the time this invitation was issued, the Duke de Broglie stood among the most influential statesmen in Europe. A leading architect of the constitutional July Monarchy under King Louis-Philippe, he played a central role in shaping French foreign policy during a period of intense political change following the Napoleonic era.

The invitation was jointly extended by the Duke and his wife, Albertine de Staël de Broglie, daughter of the celebrated intellectual and political writer Madame de Staël, one of the most influential literary and philosophical figures of the nineteenth century. Their Paris residence functioned not merely as a private home but as an important gathering place for diplomats, ministers, writers, aristocrats, and leading thinkers of the age.

Addressed to Mademoiselle Macaulay, the invitation hints at possible connections between French political society and prominent British intellectual circles, although the precise identity of the recipient remains the subject of further research.

Unlike official state papers, invitations such as this were intended for immediate use and were rarely preserved. Surviving examples provide a fascinating glimpse into the social and diplomatic world that surrounded the French government during one of the most consequential periods of nineteenth-century European history.
