Roberto Domingo (1883–1956) was one of the most celebrated painters and illustrators of bullfighting scenes in the twentieth century. His artwork became closely associated with Ernest Hemingway’s passion for Spain and the corrida, and his famous illustration “The Bullfighter” appeared on the cover of Hemingway’s classic work, Death in the Afternoon.

Why is this inscription significant?

This photograph is not merely signed by Hemingway; it is personally inscribed to Roberto Domingo, a prominent figure within Hemingway’s circle of artists, writers, and bullfighting enthusiasts. Association pieces connecting two notable historical figures are generally far scarcer and more desirable than standard signed items.
