Signed Photo of Fidel Castro & Che Guevara - 1959

Incredible original silver gelatin photograph of two modern revolutionaries: Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, believed to be taken at a baseball game in 1959 at the Estadio del Cerro in Havana, Cuba (later renamed Estadio Latinoamericano). Photographed by Osvaldo Salas, one of Castro's most trusted official photographers, and signed on reverse.

Iliana Cepero, the Cuban art historian, noted that "Castro was incredibly smart when it came to photography. Corrales, Korda and Osvaldo Salas were like his personal photographers. He knew how to get their help in gaining the support of the peasant population in remote areas. In a very real way, he convinced them through photographs. It was all very thought out."

Salas's early 60s portraits of Castro and Guevara walk the tightrope between the intimate and the orchestrated: here is Castro deep in conversation with Hemingway, and Che fishing for marlin in an annual tournament.

OSVALDO SALAS (1914-1992) is widely recognized as having been one of the world's great press photographers. His international fame came not just from the quality of his work but also because he was so often in the right place at the right time. He received many awards, diplomas and honors for his photography, including being acclaimed, in 1983, an International Master of Photography by the International Press Association.

FIDEL CASTRO RUZ (1926-) is a Cuban politician and revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba as its Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then its President from 1976 to 2008.

ERNESTO "CHE" GUEVARA (1928-1967) was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, guerrilla leader, diplomat, and military theorist. A major figure of the Cuban Revolution, his image has become a ubiquitous countercultural symbol of rebellion and global insignia in popular culture.
