J. K. Rowling Signed “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” Collector’s Edition - 2008

J.K. Rowling, The Tales of Beedle the Bard—Authentically Signed Collector’s Edition, Complete in Presentation Case
Children’s High Level Group, 2008. Amazon-exclusive deluxe edition, sold out since publication.

When The Tales of Beedle the Bard surfaced in the pages of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it existed only as legend—and then, briefly, as seven handcrafted volumes Rowling made herself, embellished with silver and moonstones. In December 2008, this Collector’s Edition brought that artifact to the wider world: a faithful evocation of the original, offered exclusively through Amazon in limited quantities with proceeds benefiting the Children’s High Level Group (now Lumos), Rowling’s charity for institutionalized children. It sold out and has never been reissued.

This example carries something the edition itself could not provide: an authentic ink signature of J.K. Rowling on the half-title page, accompanied by full documentation. Collectors should note the distinction carefully: the Collector’s Edition was issued with a printed facsimile signature on the title page, present in every copy. The genuine hand signature in this example appears separately, on the half-title—an entirely different leaf—and the listing photographs show both pages side by side so the difference is unmistakable. Rowling signs very little, and authentically signed examples of her work are among the most coveted modern literary autographs.

The complete presentation, as issued:

The set arrives in its outer case disguised as a wizarding textbook from the Hogwarts library, bound in leather with gilt spine lettering and an embossed pictorial cover design. Opening the velvet-lined case reveals a maroon velvet drawstring bag embroidered with Rowling’s signature, cradling the book itself: bound with metal skull centerpiece, metal corners and clasp, replica gemstones, raised spine bands, and emerald ribbon marker. The lid of the case conceals a velvet-lined pocket holding the complete set of ten ready-for-framing prints of Rowling’s own illustrations. The volume includes an exclusive reproduction of Rowling’s handwritten introduction and ten additional illustrations found in neither the Standard Edition nor the original handcrafted manuscript. All components are present and accounted for.

Condition: Fine (As New) throughout. The book is pristine and unread, the binding tight, the metalwork bright and unmarked, the gemstones and clasp intact, the emerald ribbon crisp. The velvet bag shows no wear or fading to the embroidery. All ten prints remain fresh in their velvet-lined pocket, and the leather outer case is clean and sharp, free of the scuffing to which this edition’s thin leather is notoriously prone. An exceptional, essentially untouched example of a set that was frequently handled and displayed by its original owners.

Documentation: The half-title signature is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from ASA (Authentic Signature Authenticity), bearing ASA’s tamper-evident hologram, hand-signed by the examining authenticator, and uniquely numbered with a corresponding entry in ASA’s online verification database. The documentation conveys with the set and is pictured in the listing photographs.

The five tales within—wise, sly, and occasionally as dark as anything in the Brothers Grimm—include “The Tale of the Three Brothers,” the story at the very heart of the Deathly Hallows. A complete Collector’s Edition in Fine condition is a prize in its own right; one bearing the author’s genuine signature on the half-title is a centerpiece for any collection of modern first editions and fantasy literature.
