James A. Garfield Free Frank Signed - 1871

Signed free frank dated February 23, 1871, postmarked Washington DC, addressed to M.P. James in Cincinnati, Ohio. On salmon-colored envelope with tape residue and fading on edges, single fold at center, else very good. Garfield autographs as president are among the most scarce, owing to his assassination four months into his term as president, but as a Member of Congress his autograph is much more affordable.

James A. Garfield (1831-1881) was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination later that year. Garfield had served nine terms in the House of Representatives, and had been elected to the Senate before his candidacy for the White House, though he declined the Senate seat once he was elected President. He was the only sitting House member to be elected president.
