Historical Context

Louis Bonaparte was appointed King of Holland by Napoleon in 1806. Unlike many of Napoleon’s relatives who ruled merely as extensions of French authority, Louis sought to govern in the interests of the Dutch people and frequently resisted his brother’s directives. His independence eventually led to conflict with Napoleon, culminating in his abdication in 1810 and the annexation of Holland into the French Empire.

Beyond his own reign, Louis occupies an even more remarkable historical position as the father of Napoleon III, who would later become Emperor of the French and oversee the Second French Empire.
