Ulysses S. Grant

Signature and Memoirs with Steel Engraving - 1885

A superb ensemble, including Ulysses S. Grant’s scarce autograph, an original steel engraving of America’s 18th president, and his two-volume set, The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant. In good condition with somewhat loose spine and marring on the covers, otherwise all pages intact.

The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant is Grant’s autobiography, focusing mainly on his military career during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Written as Grant was dying of cancer in 1885, expiring just days after the manuscript was turned over to the publisher, having never lived to see the work in book form, let alone inscribe any copies of it. The two-volume set was published by Mark Twain shortly after Grant’s death.

The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant has been highly regarded by the general public, military historians and literary critics. Positive attention is often directed toward Grant’s prose, which has been praised as shrewd, intelligent, and effective. He portrayed himself in the persona of the honorable Western hero, whose strength lies in his honesty and straightforwardness. He candidly depicts his battles against both the external Confederates and his internal Army foes.
